Monitoring
The following monitoring is carried out in accordance with the dredging
licence conditions:
- Six monthly surveys of 10 beach profiles (3 on Rhossili beach, 1 on
Mewslade beach, 3 on Port-Eynon beach and 3 on Oxwich beach), usually
carried out each March and September.
- Pre- and post-storm beach profiles once during the autumn/winter period
and once in the spring/summer on selected beaches (previously Mewslade
and Port-Eynon)
- Beach surfaces are measured using airborne laserscanner survey (LIDAR),
carried out either during during February or August.
- Annual bathymetric survey of Helwick Bank extending into Port Eynon
Bay, usually carried out
in August or September.
For each of the above surveys, data reports are produced and submitted
to the National Assembly for Wales (NAW) and The Crown Estate. These reports
are available for inspection at the NAW.
An
annual review of monitoring is undertaken by Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd's
consultant marine geologist, Dr C M Davies, and is submitted to the NAW
in order to recommend whether dredging should continue beyond one further
year. These reports are also available for inspection at the NAW.A technical
report prepared by Dr C M Davies which summarises the principal findings
from the January 2001 Review of Annual Monitoring Surveys of Helwick Bank
and Adjacent Gower Beaches 1999 to 2000 is included on this web site.
