Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd
The sand dredged from offshore is all landed at the company's Burry Port site. Sand is stockpiled at this site. This enables dredging to be restricted to two or three short periods each year, which together total no more than about eight to ten weeks. Dredging on the licence area only takes place for about 2 hours during each 24 hour period. For the remaining forty two weeks or so of the year, the dredger is employed on maintenance dredging and beach recharge projects elsewhere in the UK.
The business provides the equivalent of about 14-16, mostly locally based jobs. There are no local land-based alternative supplies of sand available,
with the nearest sand and gravel pits beyond the market area to the west,
near Cardigan. |
