Dredging Licence Applications

Overside GrabIn October 2000, Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd applied to the National Assembly for Wales for a Government View for a 15 year extension of the existing Helwick Bank licence at the rate of 300,000 tonnes per annum.

However, for some time, the company has been looking at other potential resources within the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary that might meet the stringent environmental and commercial constraints associated with marine aggregate extraction.

Following initial prospecting within the North Outer Bristol Channel sediment environment, an application for marine aggregate extraction was submitted in March 2001 in an area to be known as Nobel Banks. It is understood that the North Outer Bristol Channel region, being further offshore, may be less environmentally sensitive than near-shore alternatives.

Echo SounderTo accompany the Helwick Bank and Nobel Banks applications, comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Coastal Impact Studies (CIS) are being prepared. As part of this process, full consultation with all relevant organizations will be undertaken and all major issues addressed. These reports are likely be issued during 2002.
