Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd

Helwick BankHelwick Bank Dredging Licence

Helwick Bank has been dredged for construction aggregates since at least 1964. Prior to 1991, when dredging ceased for two years, a total of 741,000 tonnes had been dredged over a 27 year period. Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd resumed dredging in 1993, when a new four year extraction licence was granted.

The existing licence covers approximately 4.5km2 and is located centrally on the Bank in the region known as Helwick Swatch. The licence allows up to 150,000 tonnes to be extracted each year during the five year period 1998-2003. In May 1999, the company applied to increase the maximum annual permitted licence tonnage in annual increments of 50,000 tonnes up to 300,000 tonnes. A decision on this application is awaited.

An application was made to the National Assembly for Wales in October 2000 for a Government View for a 15 year extension of the existing licence at the rate of 300,000 tonnes per annum.
